ZOE
2K DCP | 5.1 surround | 1,85:1 | 12:16’ | 2022

A hot summer's day. Zoe's wet clothes sweat on her body as she and her son Janosch clear out her father's flat, who she has just moved into a retirement home. While Janosch takes a closer look at his grandpa's belongings, Zoe throws everything in the rubbish container. On the way to the garage, Janosch tries to break through to his mum, who is full of urgency to sell her father's car.

When Zoe loses control of the vehicle, her relationship with her son starts to fall apart and she has to face a decision.

Directors Comment
by Daniel Huss
What does it mean to take responsibility for several people? Working on ‘Zoe’, we tried to relate to a mother's reality, taking the perspective of a teenage son. During the research and script development with author Nicola Jakobi, we spoke to women and people with female socialisation who were 55 to 60 years old and often had to take care of their children and parents at the same time. It became more and more important for us to address Zoe's inner urgency without being afraid of pathetic images and to try to visualise the pressure she faces. I was particularly interested in Zoe's driven mindset, a restless feeling of being forced to take responsibility for almost everyone, that became a linking element in the editing.
