Remembering the sounds of our childhood. Singing songs with our siblings and listening to the frogs screaming at night. We run until there's nothing left. Back then, there were no borders. Just fire.
For thirteen-year-old Michel, boundaries between childish imagination and adolescent reality begin to blur, when his older brother leaves the family. OUR SONGS explores the echoes of childhood in the everyday life of a mutigenerationioal family, telling the memory of a separation.

When I heard the music of the band ‘Traute Fiebrich’ for the first time, memories of my childhood surfaced, and I went with the camerawoman Terry Kraatz on a research trip for the places along the Elbe that triggered these feelings in me. Even the first draft of the script was based on specific passages in the music and included concrete camera movements and shots that we had developed during our research.
From the very beginning, our aim was to capture the imaginative, childlike perception in a cinematic language that had to be expressed in the lighting, the set design, the music and the editing. The challenge was not to be distracted by the dominance of a plot and to open up spaces to trust our intuition in all stages of the work.
